VLC can stream multi-media but its fiddly and you have to start the wretched app from the PC - with a SERVER application once the server is running so long as you don't reboot the PC you can just forget it - and these types of apps especially for audio use minimal CPU / Other resources. It's often a drag to be stuck on the local computer when you just want to listen / watch stuff on a remote device - I'd go for the SERVER / CLIENT solution every time these days rather than a stand alone application that needs to run from the PC and you have to listen via the computers sound card etc.Īnother advantage is that a server can serve to multiple devices so if you have several people with different devices they can all listen as well. A Phone can also be used as the CLIENT so you can listen on that too.

That works of course but the advantage of using a SERVER for streaming is that you can stream the content to remote devices - you can often use a PHONE as a remote handset as well so you don't have to be sitting in front of the computer.
